EVERYWHERE Field User Guide for the GPSMAP H1i Plus

Use this guide to set up your Garmin GPSMAP H1i Plus with EVERYWHERE. It walks you through app registration, Bluetooth pairing, USB sync, messaging, tracking, and SOS.

You can use the H1i Plus on its own or with the EVERYWHERE App. Either way, do a USB sync and send a test message before you head into the field.

Skip every Garmin app prompt. During setup, the H1i Plus asks you to scan a QR code and install Garmin Messenger. Do not scan it. The device can pair with only one app at a time, and Garmin Messenger stops it from working with EVERYWHERE. Use the EVERYWHERE App for registration and pairing.

Before you start

Have these ready:

  • Your H1i Plus, charged.
  • Your Configuration Key, your registration QR code, or the email address your admin assigned to this device.
  • A USB-C data cable and a computer. A Windows computer works best for USB sync.
  • A spot outside with a clear view of the sky for your test message.

Get to know your device

Use the touchscreen or the buttons to move through menus and select options.

Icons at the top of the screen show your battery, GPS signal, Bluetooth connection, inReach tracking, data being sent over satellite, and unread inReach messages.

Register the EVERYWHERE App

Skip this section if you use the H1i Plus on its own.

  1. Download the EVERYWHERE App from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.
  2. Open the app. Read and accept the End User License Agreement.
  3. Enter your Configuration Key, enter the email address assigned to you, or scan your registration QR code.
  4. When the app asks about restoring message history, select No, unless you are restoring old messages.
  5. Allow access to Location, Bluetooth, and Notifications. Access to Contacts is optional.
  6. When the app asks to pair with your communicator, select Yes to pair now or No to pair later.

No Configuration Key? Try your email address instead. If you don't get a registration email, ask your Hub admin or EVERYWHERE Support to check that your email is assigned to the right device. See Why am I seeing the Invalid Configuration Key error?

Pair your H1i Plus with the EVERYWHERE App

Start on the device, then finish in the app. Keep your phone and the H1i Plus close together.

On the H1i Plus

  1. Open the apps list and select Settings > Connectivity > Bluetooth.
  2. Select the option to pair a phone, and leave the pairing screen open.

In the EVERYWHERE App

  1. Tap the Settings gear in the top right corner.
  2. Select Bluetooth Pairing and Status.
  3. Your device shows as Disconnected. Tap it.
  4. Enter the code shown on the H1i Plus, then tap Pair.
  5. Check that the status bar shows Bluetooth as Connected.

After the first pairing, the app and the H1i Plus reconnect on their own when both are on and nearby.

Pairing didn't work? Remove the old pairing on both sides, then start again on the device. On your phone, open Bluetooth settings, find the H1i Plus, and select Forget. On the H1i Plus, go to Settings > Connectivity > Bluetooth > Forget Phone. For more help, see the Bluetooth Pairing Overview.

Sync Contacts & Messages from the Hub

A USB sync loads the contacts, Preset Messages, and Quick Messages your admin set up in the EVERYWHERE Hub onto your H1i Plus. Do one before each trip and any time something changes in the Hub.

  1. Get the config file. Download it from the device page in the Hub. If you don't have Hub access, ask your Hub admin or EVERYWHERE Support for the file.
  2. Open the port. Make sure the USB port and weather cap are dry, then pull up the weather cap.
  3. Plug in. Connect the H1i Plus to your computer with a USB-C data cable. It shows up as a drive.
  4. Copy the file to the root folder. Drag the config file into the top level of the device drive, not into a subfolder.
  5. Eject. Safely eject the device, then unplug it.
  6. Apply the update. Restart the H1i Plus and follow the prompts on the screen.

Use a Windows computer if you can. Mac computers do not see the H1i Plus on their own. Garmin says you need Garmin Express installed to work with files on a Mac.

The update finishes on the device. The Hub sync icon turns green once the file is downloaded, but your changes only take effect after you restart the H1i Plus and accept the prompts. Contacts in the EVERYWHERE App update over the air. That does not update the H1i Plus, so you still need the USB sync.

A USB sync does not update firmware. To update firmware, use Garmin Express on a computer. See Understanding the USB Sync Process for inReach Devices.

Send a message

  1. Press MENU twice to go to the home page, then open the apps list.
  2. Select Messenger > New Message.
  3. Choose your recipients. Select Contacts to pick from your list, or type the recipient's details.
  4. Select Start a message. Type your message, or select Quick Text to use a saved one.
  5. Select Send.

Your location is included with each message unless you turn it off before sending.

Add a voice message or photo

Before you send, select the plus icon to add an attachment. You can add one per message.

  • Voice: record a voice message up to 30 seconds long.
  • Photos: attach a photo saved on the device.
  • Camera: take a new photo with the front or rear camera.

Stay outside until it sends. Keep a clear view of the sky until the message finishes sending. Messages sent to more than five contacts, or to email or inReach addresses, go out as individual messages, so recipients can't see each other's replies.

Send a Quick Message

Quick Messages are short, saved phrases. You choose who gets the message, then pick the phrase.

  1. Open the apps list and select Messenger > New Message.
  2. Choose your recipients.
  3. Select Start a message > Quick Text.
  4. Choose the message you want.
  5. Select Send.

Your admin can set up to 20 Quick Messages in the Hub for one device or a whole team folder. New or edited messages show up on your H1i Plus after the next USB sync.

Turn on tracking before you head out

  1. Open the apps list and select Tracking.
  2. Select Start Tracking.

If you see Stop Tracking instead, tracking is already on. Leave it as is.

Starting tracking also starts recording your activity. Stopping tracking stops both. Follow your organization's rules for when to track and how often to report.

Test your satellite connection

Send a test message before every trip to make sure your device can send and receive over satellite.

  1. Take the device outside with a clear view of the sky.
  2. Open the apps list and select Messenger > New Message.
  3. Send a message to team member
  4. Keep the device on and wait. When a reply comes back, your device is ready to use.

Never press SOS to test your device. Use a test message instead.

Send an SOS

Use SOS only in a real emergency.

  1. Lift the protective cover off the SOS button.
  2. Press and hold the SOS button.
  3. Wait for the countdown to finish. The device sends an emergency message with your location.
  4. Reply to the response team's confirmation message if you can.
  5. Keep the device on and watch for new messages.

Help still comes if you can't reply. For the first 10 minutes, the device sends your location every minute. After that, it sends it every 10 minutes to save battery. You can start an SOS with the device on or off, as long as the battery has charge.

Garmin Response is the default emergency response service. Your organization may have a different response team set up.

Cancel an SOS

Cancel only if you no longer need help or you started the SOS by mistake. You can cancel once the SOS has been sent.

  1. Lift the protective cover and hold the SOS button.
  2. Select Cancel SOS.
  3. When asked to confirm, select Cancel SOS again.
  4. Keep the device on while it sends the cancellation.

When the response team confirms, the device goes back to normal.
