How Messaging Works with the EVERYWHERE App and inReach Devices
The EVERYWHERE platform keeps your team connected through the App, inReach devices, and the Hub. App-based messages automatically route over Wi-Fi, cellular, or satellite depending on what’s available, so communication continues even in remote environments.
Messaging Overview
There are three main ways to send and receive messages:
-
inReach Device (Satellite):
-
Messages send directly over the Iridium® satellite network.
-
Supports three types of messages:
-
Preset Messages → preloaded, one-touch messages sent to assigned contacts.
-
Quick Messages → up to 20 short, prewritten phrases managed in the Hub at the device or team folder level.
-
Custom Messages → typed directly on the device.
-
-
All messages are limited to 160 characters. Longer messages will be split into multiple parts.
-
Note: IMT-capable devices (Messenger Plus, H1i Plus) allow messages up to 1,600 characters.
-
-
-
-
USB Sync is required to update contacts, preset, and quick messages configured in the Hub.
-
-
EVERYWHERE App (Data or Satellite):
-
Over Data (Wi-Fi or cellular): Send and receive messages directly in the App, even without an inReach.
-
Over Satellite (when paired): If your inReach is powered on and paired over Bluetooth, the App can also send and receive messages via satellite.
-
Media (images, video, audio) can be sent over data; over satellite, only IMT-capable devices (Messenger Plus, H1i Plus) support media.
-
-
-
EVERYWHERE Hub (Computer):
-
Hub users can message teammates from a browser.
-
Messages include timestamps, aliases, and location crosshairs so dispatchers and admins have full context.
-
-
Best Practices
-
USB Sync your inReach before going into the field to ensure contacts, preset messages, and quick messages are up to date.
-
Keep your inReach powered on and paired if you expect to lose Wi-Fi or cellular service. This ensures your App can fall back to satellite.
-
Use data (Wi-Fi or cellular) whenever available before heading out to receive Hub updates like changes to teammate contacts, check-ins, and more..
Key Takeaways
-
The App works over data or satellite (when paired).
-
The inReach provides satellite-only coverage when off-grid.
-
The Hub connects dispatchers and field users for team-wide communication.
-
Messages on the app will always route over the best available path when Intelligent Routing is enabled.
