How to Send an SOS

Learn how to send an SOS with your EVERYWHERE device or the Safeguard App. Follow these steps to trigger an emergency alert, share your location, and get help fast.

Important Reminders

  • SOS is like dialing 911 (or 999, 000, 112) — only use in true emergencies.

  • The EVERYWHERE App requires an active connection to your inReach® device to trigger SOS.

    • The App cannot trigger SOS using cellular or Wi-Fi alone.

Before You Begin

  • Make sure you have a clear view of the sky for satellite communication.

How to Trigger SOS on a Device (Recommended Best Practice)

👉 If you are using the EVERYWHERE App paired with an inReach® device, we recommend activating SOS directly on the device as the most reliable method.

  1. Lift the protective cap (see image).

  2. Press and hold the SOS button.

  3. Wait for the countdown — the device will send a default message with your location.

    • By default, Garmin Response is notified and begins coordinating the emergency response.

    • If your organization has configured an alternate emergency response team, that group will be notified instead.

  4. Respond to the confirmation message from Garmin Response to show you can communicate.

  5. Location updates are sent automatically:

    • Every 1 minute during the first 10 minutes

    • Every 10 minutes (if moving) or 30 minutes (if stationary) after that

ℹ️ Note: All inReach® devices include quick reference instructions printed on the back showing how to SEND or CANCEL an SOS. This provides a backup reminder in the field.

How to Trigger SOS in the Safeguard App (Standalone App Users)

  • Open the Messages screen in the Safeguard App.

  • Slide the SOS slider from left to right.

  • To prevent accidental activation, you’ll be prompted to confirm:

    • Tap Activate SOS to confirm and begin communicating with the SOS Monitoring Center.

    • Tap Cancel to stop and return to the previous screen.

  • Once activated, the SOS slider will remain visible in red at the top of every screen until cancelled.

Additional Notes

  • Devices cannot be turned off while in SOS mode.

  • Keep your battery charged for reliable operation in emergencies.
