What Happens During an SOS (For Field Users)
When you trigger an SOS, the EVERYWHERE platform ensures your alert reaches emergency services and your support team. The process is slightly different depending on whether you’re using an inReach device with the EVERYWHERE App or the App-only (Safeguard) license.
1. SOS Triggered
-
inReach Device Users: Lift the protective cap and press/hold the SOS button. Wait for the countdown to finish before the message is sent.
-
App-Only (Safeguard License) Users: Press the SOS button inside the App. This works over Wi-Fi or cellular only, no device pairing required.
2. Confirmation & Response
-
Your device/App confirms that the SOS has been sent.
-
Garmin Response (IERCC) messages you to confirm help is on the way.
-
Garmin Response will continue messaging you to gather details about the emergency and coordinate responders.
3. Location Updates
Once SOS is active, your location is automatically transmitted:
-
Every 1 minute for the first 10 minutes
-
Every 10 minutes if moving
-
Every 30 minutes if stationary
4. Team Alerts
-
Teammates using inReach devices or the EVERYWHERE App receive a notification when you trigger SOS.
-
The alert includes your SOS location and the distance from their position, so nearby teammates can assist if safe to do so.
5. Cancellation
-
If the emergency is resolved, press/hold the SOS button again (or cancel in the App).
-
Garmin Response will confirm before closing the SOS case.
6. Finding a Teammate in Distress
If someone else on your team triggers SOS, you’ll be notified based on your setup:
-
inReach Device Users:
You’ll receive a message with your teammate’s coordinates via satellite. Enter these into your inReach’s navigation function to guide you to their location. -
EVERYWHERE App Users:
-
If you have Wi-Fi or cellular service, you’ll receive a push notification with the teammate’s SOS location and can view it on the map.
-
If you’re paired to an inReach over Bluetooth and only satellite is available, the SOS details will flow into the App as a message (not a push notification). This ensures you still receive the coordinates even when off-grid.
-
✅ This way, both device and App users stay informed and can locate a teammate in distress under any connectivity condition.
