How to Create a Self Check-in

Self check-ins let a user confirm their own status and location from the field. They are useful when team members need to send a quick "I'm okay" message on their own schedule, without waiting on a scheduled check-in from a dispatcher or admin.

How to Send a Self Check-In from the Companion App

1. Open the EVERYWHERE Companion App on your phone. Make sure your phone is paired with your inReach device and you have a clear line of sight to the sky and/ or a strong data connection.

2.Navigate to the middle icon called Check-in

  • Toggle "Self Check-in"

3. Wait at least one minute for the check-in to send.

🚨Important: Do not close the app while the check-in is sending. Closing the app will interrupt the process.

The app may not show a confirmation right away. This does not mean the app is frozen. The message can take a minute or more to send depending on satellite/network conditions.

How to Verify Your Self Check-In Went Through

1. If you are not sure whether the check-in sent, you can confirm it from your inReach outgoing messages. (Only applies if your companion app is Bluetooth paired to your inReach device.)

2. On your inReach device, navigate to Messages

3. Open your Outgoing inReach Messages

  • Look for your self check-in message in the list.

If it shows as queued or sending, the check-in is on its way. You just need to wait for it to complete. Your screen will look like this

Alternative: Send a Self Check-In Using a Preset Message

If you are not paired with the Companion app, you can send a self check-in directly from your inReach device using a preset message.

1. On your inReach device, navigate to Preset Messages. Select Preset Message 1

2. Confirm to send.

3. The preset will deliver the same self check-in result without needing the app.

Tips for a Successful Self Check-In

  • Move to an open area with a clear view of the sky before sending.
  • Give the device time to acquire satellites. One to two minutes is normal.
  • Keep the Companion App open during the send.
  • If you are in heavy tree cover or a canyon, the preset message option on the device itself is often the most reliable path.

FAQs:

The Companion App is not showing that my check-in was registered. Is it frozen?

No. The app can take at least one minute to send the check-in, and sometimes longer in poor satellite conditions. Do not close the app. You can verify the status by checking your outgoing inReach messages.

How do I know my self check-in actually sent?

On inReach: Check your Outgoing inReach Messages on the device. If you see your self check-in message listed as queued or sending, it is on its way. Once it sends, it will appear in the Hub.

In App: You should see a green checkmark to confirm successful send.

Can I send a self check-in without the Companion App?

Yes. Use Preset Message 1 on your inReach device to send a self check-in directly.
